Zehn Fragen an Jesse Jamz (Sex Cult Records / New York)

1. How did you get into music?

As far as dance music goes, i started getting into some trance and techno when i was around 12. When i was 15 i started learning how to dj and at that time i was playing a lot of dance rock stuff and a little electro (The Faint, The Rapture, Ladytron, etc). Then in 2006 i went to Pukkelpop festival in Belgium and saw some of the best electro and house dj’s in the world… this really broadened my musical horizons. Since then i’ve pretty much fully submerged myself into the world of dance music.

2. What is your first musical reminiscence?

I don’t know.

3. What makes your sound unique?

My sound combines grimy electro basses with ravey dutch synth leads and stabs. To be honest i’m not sure if my sound is unique… it’s really hard to sound unique when pretty much everything has been done already. I just write what i like and i guess in the end that is what creates “my sound.”

4. Are there any djs who has influenced your music?

Daft Punk. They have definitely been the most influential producers in my life so far. They are truly amazing artists and i don’t know if anyone will ever equal them.

5. You´ve already worked with a lot of people – who has inspired you the most?

Out of the people i have worked with it would definitely be Designer Drugs. They work harder than anyone i know and they are constantly steppin’ it up.

6. With who would you like to play?

I would love to play with Daft Punk, Tiga, Boys Noize, Soulwax, Armand Van Helden, and definitely Justin Bieber haha.

7. A lot of DJs prefer mp3 instead of vinyl – what do you think about this development?

I prefer mp3s… I use serato with CDJs. I just don’t understand why anyone would want to constantly be traveling with heavy crates of vinyl instead of a computer and/or cd’s. I also think CDJ’s are a lot more reliable than turntables now. It’s the worst playing on turntables that aren’t properly calibrated and with CDJs you never have to worry about calibration or needles skipping.

8. What is the different between the Amerikan electro scene and the rest?

I feel like the American electro scene is more trendy… It comes and goes in waves. In places like Europe dance music is a part of everyday life, so kids grow up with it. The electro scene does seem to be constantly growing in the US and hopefully it will continue to. It would be cool if in a few years electro tracks were on the US top 40 charts.

9. What kind of music do you hear to relax?

It depends on the mood i’m in. if i want to relax but listen to dance music i’ll listen to some chill minimal or progressive house. If i want to listen to more melodic music i’ll listen to Sigur Ros, The Photographic, Phoenix, Belle & Sebastian, Foals, Air, M83… i could go on but i think you get the picture.

10. What can we excpect from you in the future? What will come next, what can we expect from you?

Well right now i’m working on a lot of original tracks. i’m not sure if i’m gonna put out an ep or an album yet… we’ll see. i know a lot of people have been waiting for original material from me so i’m excited to finally get some out. They will be released on Sex Cult Records, Designer Drugs’ label.
